COMM 3411 - Creative Nonfiction in Media

This is a course in creative writing and reading designed for Fashion Media students planning to write feature articles, but it will be valuable for anyone interested in cultural history who wants to learn how to tell better stories. A half century ago a group of pioneering writers broke the rules in journalism by incorporating techniques used in fiction into their stories to make them more compelling. These so-called new journalism techniques include experiments in sensory imagery, point of view, first-person reporting, dialogue, cinematic jump cuts and scene reconstruction. Students will incorporate those techniques in their own writing assignments, including two longer profiles.
