The purpose of this course is to promote analytical thinking through critical reading and academic research. Students will learn how to identify claims, evaluate evidence, examine assumptions, and propose counter-arguments. Readings, class discussions, videos and independent research are the texts for analyzing issues. To demonstrate their own developing competency in structuring an argument, students will also write short research essays using the APA style of documentation. In addition, learning how to use online databases and print sources is essential to deepening thought as students become part of an academic community.
