Portfolio assessment is the process used by students to develop and submit a portfolio to Faculty Evaluator(s) for the purpose of awarding college credit. A portfolio is a formal communication presented by the student to the college as part of a petition requesting credit or recognition for extra-collegiate learning. The portfolio provides sufficient supporting information and documentation so Faculty Evaluator(s) can use it alone or in combination with other evidence, as the basis for their evaluation. Petitions for credit are based on college-level learning or learning that is equivalent to a college level course.
At the time approved credits are granted, the following must be in effect:
-
The student must be a currently enrolled degree seeking student.
-
Granted credits cannot duplicate previously awarded or earned credits (in other words, students cannot earn credit twice for the same learning).
-
Granted credits must fulfill requirements in a student’s degree plan or goal.
-
Students cannot petition for credits evaluated against elective and/or non-required courses.
Restrictions and Limits
-
Undergraduate students may write for a maximum of thirty (30) undergraduate credits.
-
Portfolio assessment credits do not add to a student’s semester status (full-time, part-time, etc.).
Financial and Student Aid Considerations
The portfolio assessment fee is non-refundable, and payment is not dependent upon the granting of credit(s). In addition, government aid, scholarships and loans are not available for portfolio assessment fees.
Portfolio Authenticity
Students who plagiarize material or fabricate documents will receive no credit for the portfolio in addition to the fee being non-refundable. Depending on the severity of the offense, the use of plagiarized or fabricated portfolio contents may result in expulsion from the College or other actions in accordance with the College’s Code of Conduct. In addition to reviews by faculty and staff, portfolios will be analyzed by plagiarism detection software to verify authenticity and integrity.
Credit Transcription
After faculty evaluation and approval, the credits earned through portfolio assessment will appear on a student’s transcript as “LIM Portfolio Assessment” with the course number, course name, and number of credits. Grades are neither assigned nor transcribed on the transcript. Credit denials will not be transcribed by the College.
Transferability of Credit
LIM does not guarantee the transferability of portfolio assessment credit to other educational institutions. Any student considering transferring to another institution should check the institution’s transfer and credit award polices.
Deadlines
Portfolios must be submitted to the Portfolio Assessment Advisor within six (6) months of the approval date of the contract. Students should allow 10-12 weeks for portfolio evaluation. Students should keep in mind registration and graduation deadlines. Students close to graduation intending to use portfolio credits should be mindful of the time it takes to process the portfolio assessment.
