Repeat Policy

Graduate Repeat Policy

A graduate student may repeat a course to replace a failing final grade (F, FA, F* or FA*) or under certain circumstances, when seeking to improve the student’s Cumulative GPA. Such repeated courses will be designated with an “R” on the transcript and the original grade will no longer accrue into the Cumulative GPA; however, the original grade and Semester GPA will remain the same for that semester.

A failed course is eligible for grade replacement a maximum of two tries, after which all failures would accrue into both the Semester and Cumulative GPAs. Students who earn three F’s for a same course must meet with the Dean of Graduate Studies to determine the feasibility of degree completion. Remedies for degree completion may include changing to another program.  In certain cases wherein degree completion is impossible the student will be academically dismissed. Students are encouraged to repeat a failed course the next time it is offered in order to help maintain a satisfactory Cumulative GPA.

Students are generally ineligible to repeat a course in which they have earned a passing grade. However, a student wishing to improve their Cumulative GPA by repeating a course originally graded less than a “B” may repeat the course once if pre-approved by the Dean of Graduate Studies. To obtain the form to repeat a course, please contact the Office of the Registrar.

GPA

Any course designated with an “R” does not affect the Semester GPA in either the semester the failure was earned nor in the semester in which the course was repeated. However, while the course designated with an “R” does not affect the Cumulative GPA in the semester the failure was earned, it does affect the Cumulative GPA of the semester in which the course was repeated. Note that students will not be retroactively taken off probation or dismissal status based upon any repeated course.

How Repeated Courses Affect Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) and Financial Aid Eligibility

Any repeated course that is designated as an “R” will be counted as credits attempted but not as credits earned for SAP calculations to determine rate of completion and maximum time frame calculations. Financial aid regulations permit students to repeat a course that has been passed only once in order to attempt a better grade. Any additional repeats of previously passed courses are not eligible for federal financial aid and will not be used to calculate the student’s enrollment status for determining federal financial aid eligibility.
