To remain in good academic standing, graduate students must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00 and successfully complete at least 50% of the total credits they have attempted while enrolled. For example, a student who has attempted 18 total credits across all semesters must have earned passing grades in at least 9 of those credits. Unsuccessful attempts include grades of F, FA (Failure due to Absences), or W(Withdrawal).
Students who fall below a 3.00 cumulative GPA and/or who have not successfully completed at least 50% of their total attempted credits will be placed on academic probation for one semester. During this probationary period, the student must improve their academic standing by:
- Raising their cumulative GPA to 3.00 or higher, and
- Successfully completing additional coursework to ensure that at least 50% of all credits attempted to date are completed with passing grades.
Students may remain on academic probation for no more than two enrolled semesters total. Failure to return to good academic standing by the end of the second probationary semester will result in Graduate Academic Dismissal
To support academic recovery, students on probation are subject to the following limitations:
- Main campus students may register for no more than nine credits per semester while on probation.
- Online program students may register for no more than three credits in Session 1 and six credits in Session 2.
- Participation in one-credit internships and volunteer opportunities offered through the Department of Career and Internship Services is restricted.
Students seeking to exceed the allowed course load while on probation must obtain written approval from the Dean of Graduate Studies
