HIST 3030 - The Caribbean

This course introduces students to the major factors that have shaped life in the Caribbean. It takes an interdisciplinary approach to the study of Caribbean history, economy, politics, and society to arrive at an understanding of the social and political issues affecting the Caribbean today. The course covers topics such as legacies of slavery and colonialism, independence and nationalism, Caribbean political thought and revolution, U.S. intervention, debt politics, race and identity, gender and sexuality, culture and religion, and Caribbean literature and film. It will examine major states in the greater Caribbean such as Haiti, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica, as well as places still in a territorial, dependency, or colonial status such as Puerto Rico.
