Academic Engagement

To succeed at LIM College, students are expected to actively and consistently participate in their courses. This is known as Academic Engagement and is essential for learning and is a key factor in academic standing. The purpose of this policy is to define the activities that LIM College recognizes as official academic engagement for purposes of verifying attendance, monitoring course participation, and maintaining compliance with state and accrediting agency requirements.

Academic Engagement is defined as active participation by a student in an instructional activity related to their course of study.

To be considered academic engagement, the activity must meet the following criteria:

  1. It must be an officially recognized activity defined by LIM College.
  2. It must be an instructional activity that is tracked and documented by the institution.

Academic Engagement includes, but is not limited to:

  • Attending a synchronous class (physically or online) where there is an opportunity for interaction between the instructor and the student.
  • Submitting an academic assignment.
  • Taking an exam or an assessment.
  • Participating in an interactive tutorial or webinar.
  • Participating in a group project deliverable or online discussion that the school assigns.

Activities that do NOT count as Academic Engagement include:

  • Living in institutional housing.
  • Attending a job or internship interview
  • Participating in an internship without submission of an associated academic component or deliverable.
  • Logging into an online class or learning management system without any further participation.
  • Participating in academic counseling or advisement.
  • Submitting an experience record in Handshake

In essence, Academic Engagement requires a student to be an active participant in activities directly related to the learning and content of their course. Actions such as passive observation, logging into a system without further action, or participating in general college-related activities do not meet the criteria for academic engagement.
