SOCI 2326 - New York Writers

Arts & Sciences
This course explores classic and popular writing by the New Yorkers who defined Downtown, SoHo, the Meat Packing District, the Upper East Side, Wall Street, the Garment District, and the Lower East Side, as well as cultural groups from the Beats to Abstract Expressionists to Punks to Performance Artists. We begin with the raw realism of Stephen Crane and move all the way to manga, animated film and worldwide youth culture today, in each case connecting popular work to the philosophies, political and historical significance, and business of producing culture in Manhattan.
