ACOM 233 - The Music Experience

An introductory music course that traces the development of Western music from its rudimentary beginnings up to 1820.  The course follows a chronological timetable that extends through the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods, and introduces the era now regarded as “Classical.”  The course draws on significant music from these varied and interconnected musical traditions, allowing students to develop a basic knowledge of these traditions and the remarkable composers that defined them.  Through reading, guided listening, and concerts, students directly experience the music that accompanied the rise of European culture over two millennia. Attention is also given to works of non-Western and Eastern origins. No prior knowledge of music is required.
