ENGL 3110 - Junior Writing Topics

Arts & Sciences
Previous Course Number: ACOM 300

This course is designed to further students’ writing and analytical skills and help them develop professional-level competence as writers. Writing and critical thinking skills are central to every academic and professional discipline. These skills will be developed through a combination of response or critique papers, formal papers, quizzes, in-class discussions, and peer-review sessions. Topics and issues of contemporary America are covered, including popular culture, the environment, media, and consumerism. The course places a special emphasis on using research and critical thinking – rather than predetermined ideology – when developing ideas about complex problems. Students are expected to read actively and to carefully edit their own writing with a specific focus on organizing their ideas into well-articulated, coherent arguments and cultivating a keen eye for styles and genres of writing.
